I love you, Marge," Nate murmured. "Tell me what's wrong. Maybe I can help."

For long moments she pressed her face tightly to his shoulder. "You can't help," she said finally. "There's nothing anyone can do."

"Then tell me. It helps to talk."

"You'd never understand. Never. I don't want to lose you. Nate, I'd die if I lost you...."

"Why do you think you'd lose me?" It was amazingly difficult to ask that question. He couldn't imagine what was so awful that she'd fear such a thing, but the fact that she did was enought to clamp a vise on his chest and make it almost impossible to breathe.

And it got even worse when she didn't answer but instead burst into fresh tears. All he could do was holder her and wait for the storm to pass.

And hope that it wasn't about to tear his life to shreds.
